Well, last night at about 12:00, I was sitting in my dimly lit kitchen, looking bewilderingly at my 14 yr old son. He was sitting across the table from me eating cheese flavored rice cakes, and laughing in silent, hysterical laughter, while he tried to recount all of the funny things that happened while skiing. But why was I bewildered, you ask? Because he was doing all of this with an enormously swollen lip, and the remnants of a very bloody nose. Apparently, Mr. Alpine skiier had cleared one jump, and was about to clear the next one, but was unprepared for the ditch in front of it. One ski caught, and SLAM! Face meets ice. If he hadn't turned his head in time, all the weight would have come down square on his nose. What was so shocking, is how little it bothered him. All he could talk about, (with his disfigured face) was how much fun he had, how he had gone down the black diamond without falling, and all the funny things that were said. THIS, from the once little six year old boy who would need a stretcher to carry him off of the Pee-Wee soccer field, if he accidently stubbed his toe. THIS from the boy, who at 10 asked to be taken to the hospital and put to sleep, to have a splinter removed. And there he was......sitting in the kitchen, taller than me, with his face all swollen and smeared with dried blood......laughing hysterically at the great time that he had.
Did you hear that? That was the sound of time swooshing by me...
As my latest batch of Saltine Toffee cools in the fridge, I thought that I would share the recipe (for you Jess).
Saltine Toffee
1/2 cup of butter and 1/2 cup of sugar in a sauce pan, until it is melted. Let it bubble for a few minutes. Then pour it over about 35 saltine crackers that you have placed, in one layer, on a foil lined cookie sheet. Place in 400 degree oven, for a few minutes until it is really bubbly. Take it out and spread with 1/4 to 1/2 cup of chocolate chips. Let them sit a second until warmed, and then spread them evenly. Place in the fridge until hardened, break and enjoy! Then hide the saltines, so that no one eats them before you can make more.
It has been kind of a lazy day around here today. I am finishing up a lot of last minute Christmas details. And I guess we will be doing a lot of wrapping tonight. We will do some baking tomorrow, and then Thomasina is coming over for dinner on Wednesday night. I bought the book The Littlest Angel to read aloud...(we have quite a collection of Christmas picture books, as I try to find a worthy book each year), so we may get to that tonight. It is pretty quiet and relaxed here this year. And it feels so good.
Well, the Saltine Toffee should be about done, so I am outta here.
G'night!
Melissa

Yikes, what a ski trip! Can't say that I would call that a good time, but if he's happy, me too!
Don't you just love Christmas books? I am such a sucker for books. I drag out our stash every year and we read one a day. Today was The (l-o-n-g) Story of Holly and Ivy--Will's choice. We've yet to read The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey--one of my favorites. We also have to be sure to get in Red Ranger Came Calling one day this week.
Got your card today. BEA-YOO-TI-FUL! No wonder you waited 'til after your trip to send 'em!
Have a great evening! Lynette
POOR AUSTIN! I hope he's a fast healer. And I'm glad this didn't happen BEFORE your Christmas picture was taken. Well, at least he had a great time and can laugh about it. Sure am glad he turned his head before he hit though.
BTW, I heard that swooshing sound too!
Enjoy the Saltine Toffee. I haven't made any yet, but I did make a batch of chocolate rum balls and a batch of bourbon balls today. They need to sit for about a week before you eat them.
That lazy day sure sounds good. It has NOT been a lazy day here.
I will probably be wrapping presents tonight too, as I got most of my shopping finished today.
Can't wait 'til yall get here for Christmas.
Love, Mom
Don't you just love that recipe? We started making it about 4 years ago and we call it tree bark. Kids are so great aren't they? If Wayne twists his ankle in gym he limps around like he's dying and thinks he just might need an x-ray but if he wrecks on his bike while he's practicing a new trick "it was great, you should have seen it."
Glad you all made it to and back from your trip safely.
Bridget
I'm sure it's hard to see his injuries but I imagine it would have been worse to witness the accident. That will take a few weeks off your life! He sounds like a tough guy...I know you're proud!
We received your Christmas card today! It looks so nice!
And let me tell you, the story of Austin (though I am sorry he was hurt and am glad he is OK) did my heart good! I remember him when he was little and as you well know our oldest can be full of drama at the slightest injury. We worry over him sooo much! But remembering Austin then and seeing him now does The Dude and I such good :)
We are all so excited about Christmas this year. Can't wait to see you guys!!
OK.
I'm feeling a little weird here, as someone appears to have stolen my identity (MOM!!). Well, that'll teach me not to mess with her computer while I'm there visiting.
Everytime I read about the Saltine Toffee, my mouth waters...literally!
That's pretty funny about Austin's transformation.I remember that whole splinter incident! And it so cool that he now sees the humor in his mishaps! Still, I'm awfully glad you didn't have to SEE that one happen!
Looking VERY forward to Wednesday night!!
BWAHAHAHA! I didn't even notice that MOM posted as THOM!!! too funny. Hey Thom, we're having Crab Bisque, and guess what? I got the stuff to make Cosmopolitans!! Can't wait!
Thanks Melissa! :-) I needed a quick and yummy dessert for Sunday night! Mmmmmm
I'm sorry for Austins accident but it sure gives me hope. My 8yo cries harder than my 2yo at the slightest thing and truth be told, I was starting to wonder if it would ever wear off or if he needed to be picked on in PS (haha) for it to go away. ;-)
Bittersweet, them growing isn't it? *sigh*
