Perhaps it is because we are nature lovers. Or maybe it is just that we are easily amused. I am not sure what it says about us, but the entire family has been absolutely mesmerized by a Christmas gift that Em and The Dude gave to Jack this year. At any given time of the day you can see one, two, three, or as much as all four of us huddled around a tiny blue 10 inch square. Upon closer observation, one would discover that it is an ANT FARM! Honestly, this is the coolest thing to see. I mean, I can remember trying to have ant farms as a kid. You know you get just-the-right-dirt, and then dig up just-the-right ants. Then they dig one tiny hole and all die. THOSE are the ant farms of my childhood. ANd if you were raised even farther south than I was then it only took one experience with Fire Ants to know that you didn't want to farm those beastly things anyway!
But this. This is so cool! You can view the ants from all sides and the blue, jelly like substance that they are tunneling through is both their food and water. They require nothing! It has become an addiction. When we arrive home someone invariably yells, "WOAH! Look how much the ants have done!" So, yeah. We are impressed. But then, we also have a crawdad who has happily taken up residence in Frodo's old tank(remember, the deceased gold fish, who was cryogenically frozen?)....so....I guess we like that kind of stuff!
Speaking of Frodo, we did finally bury him. It was quite the service. Jack insisted that we all participate because, "You know.........he was family". I cant remember all of the eulogy,(you can thank me later), but I did hear myself saying the words, " Frodo was a good swimmer. He was the best.MYyyyyyyy...how he did swim". And then later as I became even more desperate, I said "And he was always there to wave a happy fin at anyone who passed by". (groan) Jack was happy and the gold fish is out of my freezer. But God help us if the dog dies.
G'night,
melissa

ROFL did you have a few glasses before the eulogy? I remember having to write and e-mail death announcement to friends and family of our guinea pig, Skittles. Complete with photos of each child holding the deceased little rodent! LOL
I really want to get one of those gel ant farms! Even the snake just needs to be fed once a week and that's too much for me...LOL
YEA!! I am so glad the ant farm works! So many times those kind of things can be such a disappointment. Sea Monkeys, anyone??
I am happy to hear Frodo is finally resitng in peace.
Also, Q got a new Star Wars guy today, and he said if he could get up the nerve he may call Jack tomorrow to tell him about it.

What a post! I WANT an ant farm now.Really want it. Well,as the mother of boys I'm sure this is not the FIRST strange thing you have had to do(fish eulogy)so I imagine you have some half-decent nerves for this type of thing.Keep us educated-Ikeep hearing murmurings about turtles and hermit frogs in this house.Am holding out for frogs-I'm a BIG frog fan! Marcella
We have been through a dog, a cat and 3 guinea pigs dying, we have quite the pet cemetary between our house and my mother-in-laws. It is devestating for a child(and the adults) to lose a pet. Tell Jack he is right, they are family. I'm glad he's having a good time with the ant farm, you made me want one. As you know I had just about every animal growing up, but we never did the ant farm. I may have to try that, Blake would love it.

ROFLMBO!! I love your Mutual Of Omaha adventures! They're hilarious, and you have such a great, vivid way of writing them that I can see it all unfolding... "While we wait from the safety of the Suburban, Jack pounces on the unsuspecting crawdad..."
Oh, and just a PSA regarding the fire ants: get a pouch of tobacco and keep it handy. If you (don't gag) chew a clump of it and then put the poultice on the bite, it takes the sting away immediately. Leaves a nasty brown stain, but when you're a kid, who cares as long as it makes the pain stop?!?
Have a fantastic weekend!

LOL!!
I really do want an ant farm! And now, with Dy's handy little home remedy, I can have one.....in North Carolina! LOL
LOL @ the frog eulogy.
The tobacco trick also works for bee stings, AND it gives you a nice little buzz :)
