So this is why you get married.
Sometimes I lose track of the big picture. We had a particularly stressful day, lesssons dragging along, oldest child remembers NOTHING of the the last 8 years of education, youngest child is sick in the bed ,and middle child........well... thank heaven for the middle child. A day when everytime that you walk into the room, that laundry pile has gotten BIGGER, and those floors STILL haven't been cleaned. So. It was that kind of day. The kind of day that Satan uses to pull the rug from beneath my feet. To cause me to focus on MY abilities (or lack thereof). The kind of day that makes you want to pull the covers back over your head. I am ashamed to see how easily that I am discouraged.
But that's why I have been given a partner in this adventure. This is when Race steps in and reminds me why we chose this route. He reminds me of the big picture. How when we started down this road it wasn't to produce -fill-in-the-worksheet scholars. We were aiming for the "whole child". To train their hearts as well as their minds. To teach them to THINK on their own. To prepare them to be used by God in whatever way that he sees fit. Because that is our responsibility. And ours alone. And THAT is a big job. And it is one that I am not able to do..... on my own. It is only through God's wonderful grace, and that alone, that success or fulfillment will come.
And Race reminds me that a 13 yr old squirming over theology.....isn't such a bad thing. That a boy who would rather play baseball than do algebra should bring a sigh of relief. And he reminds me that we have great kids. That as PEOPLE they are truly great. They LIKE to learn new things, they are funny and compassionate. They meet new challenges head on. They are well rounded. And they love the Lord.
So. Thank-you Race. Once again you have brought the perspective that helps keep this ship sailing. Thanks for reminding me that this is a marathon and not a sprint.
Savannah and I met Thom yesterday after I got my hair cut, (good cut, I'm happy). We got coffee and chatted for a bit. She is looking quite spiffy with her new found weight loss. Go Girl! We are at the 9 day count down till the beach. I am still doing my work outs. I realized last night that I have been working out close to 2 hrs each day! Abs in the morning, and then switching around at night with different tapes. That is TOTALLY a record for me. But I will be glad when it cools off a bit and I can start running. Sometimes it just seems so much easier to just throw your shoes on and get out the door, kwim? Now....if I can just keep at it, and not sputter out in a few weeks!
Have a great day!
While you're kissin on those babies, don't forget to kiss your spouse too!

Sounds like your kids are perfectly normal. Not so much from my own children--because they aren't old enough yet--but from my years as a 5th grade teacher before mine came along, I can tell you that there are lots of days like that. Some days you stop and wonder if you're teaching the same children you were yesterday. Then tomorrow the ones you remember show up. And I agree with Race, you don't want them to be nerdie (sp?) and prefer books to entertainment always. You're doing a fantastic job. Keep your head up and "plow" on--that's farmgirl for don't give up!
Congrats on the happy cut. I got mine cut Friday and it wasn't so happy. She cut toooo much. It'll grow back! :)
Thomasina, if you read this, congrats on your dieting. AND I've looked at your website! You do some goooood stuff. Wish you were closer!

So you have those kind of days too!Satan will do ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING to bring us down. But, the Lord knows just when to step in and bring us up again. You are so right in knowing what a wonderful husband you have in Race. And your children have been blessed with a good level-headed, Christian father. And, anyone who knows your children can see that they truely are GREAT KIDS. Congradulations on all that working out you've been doing.(Not that I think you need it.) Sounds like you and Thomasina have both been doing a lot of it.I"ll be glad when it cools off too. Makes the outdoor activities much easier. Emily and the gang are having a great time. Can't wait until we are ALL down there . Love, Mom
So THAT"S why you get married! HAHAHA!--just kidding!
Good ole Race--the Marathon Man!
They ARE just the BEST kids. You are both doing a great job there.
Thanks for the compliment(your hair looks greta, BTW!). 9 days, only 9 days!
okay that's supposed to read "you're hair looks GREAT, BTW!" not "greta". I gotta start gettng to bed earlier, or something!
I loved this post Melissa. It is so, so true. Oftentimes it's my husband that makes or breaks the day (and vice versa) and not really the kids. Thanks for the reminder to appreciate him, ever since I wrote our "how-we-met" story the other day I can't stop thinking of him how I did when I was 18, it's so much fun.
Race sounds like a wonderful husband and your children sound truly wonderful as well, and absolutely normal. ;-)
Thanks for your SL comments on my blog, I feel better knowing I'm not the only lost one...lol
Hugs!
I'm so glad you have a husband who complements you as well as compliments you.
Yup, yup, yup. God grows the good 'uns, and then shares them with us. It's *happy sigh* wonderful! I'm glad he could talk you off the ceiling. It's way too hot up there right now.
So - pictures of the new 'do??? Ahem!
And I'm really glad you listened to Race - he's right, your children are awesome, and you're following God's plan. It's all good.

It's wonderful to have a husband that is able to lift you up just when you need it. Sometimes you just have to stop and thank God for giving us the husbands that he has even though sometimes you just want to strangle them. You hear people talk about home schooled children and how they don't have outside interests, well you have definitely proved them wrong. Keep up the good work.
Bridget
Sounds like you have a wonderful husband there, Melissa!
I love this post, it is so true! I really like your line about "fill-in-the-worksheet scholars, good one!
Good luck with the running, it is my saving grace on days when the ceiling wants to be my permanent home, LOL
